The Tallow Sold on Main Street Is Made on Main Street

Most shops on Main Street in Franklin sell things that were made somewhere else. Flying Cow Natural Skincare, at 418 Main Street across from the Franklin Theatre, is one of the exceptions. The whipped tallow balms on its shelves are made in the same building, in small batches, often while customers are browsing a few feet away.

Flying Cow is a family owned skincare company founded in Midland, Texas in 2017 by Britney and Joshua Arceneaux. It grew into three Texas stores before the couple opened the Franklin location, which soft opened in December 2025 and held its grand opening on February 13, 2026. Rather than ship product in from Texas, they set up production on site so the Tennessee store could make its own.

The process is simple to describe and slow to do. Grass fed beef suet is rendered over low heat, strained until it runs clear, cooled to just the right point, and then whipped with carrier oils until it turns pale and airy. The finished balm has a texture closer to frosting than to the block of fat it started as. Visitors who time it right can watch a batch being whipped while they shop, and the staff are happy to talk through each step.

The store carries the full Flying Cow range, including unscented Golden Tallow, the scented balms, and the serums, alongside A Place for the Maker, a collective of more than twenty Tennessee artisans whose work the shop purchases outright.
