How to Choose Your First Tallow Balm Without Overthinking It

Share article

Tallow skincare has gone from obscure to everywhere in a few short years, and anyone browsing it for the first time runs into the same wall. The jars look nearly identical, the names don't explain much, and the ingredient lists are so short there's nothing to compare. So how do you pick?

The honest answer is that it matters less than it looks. Here is a simple way to think it through, using the lineup at Flying Cow Natural Skincare, a family-owned company that Britney and Joshua Arceneaux started in their Midland, Texas kitchen in 2017 and now runs four stores across Texas and Tennessee.

Start With the Base, Not the Name

Every whipped tallow balm begins the same way. Suet from grass-fed cattle is rendered slowly, strained, cooled, and then whipped by hand until a firm block turns light and fluffy. That whipping step is what separates a whipped balm from a poured one, and it's why a small amount spreads so easily.

Once that base exists, essential oils are folded in at the end. That's the only real difference between most jars on a tallow shelf. Understanding this takes most of the mystery out of choosing.

Pick by Scent, Then by Feel

Since the base is shared, scent is the practical first filter.

Golden Tallow is the simplest option, carrying three kinds of frankincense with a mild scent and a light feel. It's the usual recommendation for a first jar.

Restore is the company's best seller, built on the same base with helichrysum added, and noticeably richer in the jar.

Lavender is quieter and tends to end up on a nightstand rather than a bathroom counter.

Unscented contains no essential oils at all, which makes it the right answer for anyone who would rather not introduce another scent into their day.

Buy Small and Use Less

A pea-sized amount, warmed between the fingertips and pressed into skin, covers the face and neck. Most people use far too much in the first week and then settle into using a fraction of that. A single jar often lasts months, which makes a first purchase a low-stakes decision.

One Thing Worth Knowing

Not every tallow brand's serums contain tallow. At Flying Cow, most serums are carrier oil blends, with one tallow-based exception. If the tallow itself is what you're after, read the serum descriptions rather than assuming.

Try Before You Decide

The easiest route, if you live near a shop that allows it, is to sample. Flying Cow keeps every jar open for sampling in its stores in Midland, Lubbock, and Fredericksburg, Texas, and in Franklin, Tennessee, at 418 Main Street across from the Franklin Theatre. The full range is also available at flyingcowtallow.com.
