The Dinosaur Game was introduced in 2014 as a playful way to entertain users when they encountered the dreaded “No Internet” screen. Instead of simply displaying an error message, Google added a small pixelated dinosaur that could jump over obstacles.
The developers reportedly referred to it as “Project Bolan,” inspired by Marc Bolan of the band T. Rex. The concept was simple: if you cannot connect to the internet, you might as well have a bit of fun while waiting.
