Six and Seven-Letter Wordle - Why Longer Does Not Just Mean Harder

Everybody understands that longer means harder. It is clear that a problem with seven letters will be forty percent harder than a problem with five letters. They are not correct. What makes it harder

Three reasons, and none of them have anything to do with mere volume.

It becomes harder to retrieve a word. Identification of a seven-letter word with O being in the fourth position marked green, and T being orange is a much bigger request because your vocabulary is sorted by the meaning rather than spelling, and searching through it according to the shape becomes increasingly hard with more restrictions.

Your memory overflows. Tracing letters which are already identified, letters that are ruled out, and positions becomes too much for a person. Mistakes in seven-letter game are always mistakes of accounting, not logic.

The budget does not grow. And that is the actual reason. Six tries are generous for five letters. Six tries are barely enough for seven letters, and there is little margin left for exploration.

Suffixes make a huge difference

The key thing about six and seven letter words is predictability of word endings.

Most English words will end with ING, ION, TION, NESS, MENT, ABLE, ANCE or ENCE. Having just a tiny clue about which ending a word uses allows solving three or four letters in the word.

It changes the nature of the good first guess. At five letters, you need balanced coverage. At six or seven letters, using letters appearing in endings becomes more beneficial than their frequency suggests.

Plurals are also a factor. At seven letters, ending with S is frequent enough to consider it.

Adjusting your strategy

Make fewer guesses. With six tries and seven letters, information-seeking guess is a luxury you can't afford. Make your decision faster than you normally would at five letters.

Test the structure instead of the letter. Once you have a plausible ending, guess the word that confirms the whole ending, not the individual letters.

Use clues whenever they are available. Hints that you can receive at Wordle Unlimited become much more helpful in longer length puzzles because one revealed letter makes a huge difference.

Slow down. Seven-letter games punish quick plays much more than five-letter games because inability to retrieve a word you need fast is virtually impossible to compensate.
