House Removals in Melbourne: What They Cost and How to Plan a Move That Actually Goes Smoothly

Moving house in Melbourne rarely goes exactly to plan. The truck crawls behind a tram on Sydney Road, someone’s nabbed the lift in your Southbank building, or it buckets down at 2 pm. Here’s what people usually ask us before a move.

What pushes the price up

Access is the big one: stairs with no lift, or a long carry from a narrow Fitzroy street. Half-packed drawers add time too, and you pay by the hour. Mention pianos or pool tables when you ask for a quote, not on the morning. Also ask when the clock starts, whether there’s a minimum, and whether there are fuel levies or stair fees. We don’t add extras beyond the quote. Plenty of operators do.

Getting the truck size right

A truck that’s too small means a second run, and you pay for that drive. A three-bedder in Werribee with a packed double garage is really a four-bedroom load. Do a quick lap with your phone, note the bulky stuff and send it with your quote request.

When to book house movers in Melbourne

End of month, Fridays, Saturdays, December, January and late February book out first, so book two to four weeks ahead. A mid-month Tuesday is usually easy. We also do last-minute removals when settlement or a lease falls through.

The Melbourne stuff nobody warns you about

Councils such as the City of Melbourne, Yarra, Stonnington and Port Phillip often need a parking permit for the truck, so allow a week or two. Check clearway times on main roads too. Apartment buildings usually want the goods lift booked, and some limit moving hours, so check the loading dock and entry height as well. In new estates like Tarneit or Wollert, send the crew a map pin the night before. Keep old towels and plastic wrap by the door in case of rain.
