Preparing for the IAPP AIGP Exam: Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
Share article
The IAPP AIGP exam is an AI governance professional certification offered by the IAPP. It is designed for individuals who assist organisations in adopting artificial intelligence responsibly and securely. It is difficult for candidates not because the test is hard, but because of the wrong method they use in preparation for the test. This article focuses on these errors and ways to avoid them.
What Does the IAPP AIGP Exam Actually Test?
This exam tests whether you can govern AI, not build it. You do not need to write code.
The body of knowledge splits the content into four domains. This is what makes up AI governance, laws and frameworks, AI development governance, and AI deployment governance. According to IAPP, the types of questions in this certification are mainly about recall, comprehension, application, and analysis. Therefore, you must have the knowledge and also apply it in the practical world.
AI governance not your cup of tea? You can find more information by comparing it with other certifications on CertBoosters.
Which Mistakes Hurt AIGP Exam Preparation Most?
Skipping the body of knowledge. All topics are included, with the number of questions per topic. Without it, you are guessing what to study.
Using an old version. The current version is 2.1, and it was effective from 2 February 2026. IAPP updates it annually and notifies candidates about 90 days before the new content comes out. Remember to check the version before you begin.
Memorizing laws without understanding them. Topics that appear in the IAPP AIGP exam include the EU AI Act, the NIST AI Risk Management Framework, and ISO standards. Do not just learn names. Figure out how to employ them, such as categorising risks associated with AI systems.
Ignoring development and deployment. Domains III and IV each carry 21 to 25 questions. Domain II carries 19 to 23, and Domain I carries 16 to 20. Many people focus only on the legal side and lose easy points elsewhere.
Reading without practicing. Notes alone will not prepare you for scenario questions. You need to practice choosing the best answer under pressure.
How Can You Fix These Mistakes Before Exam Day?
Start with IAPP’s free body of knowledge. IAPP also offers a study guide with sample questions, so grab that too.
Then study one domain at a time and test yourself right after. Keep your score for each domain so you can see where you are weak.
When you feel ready, try these IAPP AIGP exam questions to check your progress. For every wrong answer, write down why it was wrong. Then review that topic again.
Consistency trumps procrastination. Small study periods every day make it easier to remember things than long cram sessions on weekends.
Which AIGP Exam Domain Are You Quietly Ignoring?
Consider the last time that you were studying. Which academic subject was your focus? Consider also the one from which you strayed.
Be honest. That skipped domain is often the one that costs the most points. So which one is it for you?
