Traffic Challans in the Last 30 Days: Crackdowns, New Deadlines and What Every Vehicle Owner Should Do Now
Share article
Over the past month, traffic enforcement in India has been hard to miss. Cameras and police teams are issuing challans in large numbers, and the e-challan rules now give owners much less time to react than they used to have.
What the last 30 days looked like
In Gurugram, traffic police issued 37,657 challans between October 5 and 11, with fines of about Rs 4.10 crore. Around 16,300 of those came from surveillance cameras, and improper lane changes were the biggest camera-detected offence. September also saw a month-long drive against overspeeding and drunk driving on the city’s main routes, which led to more than 9,000 challans and roughly Rs 1.51 crore in fines. uniindiauniindia
The pattern is clear. Many challans are now generated automatically, and they often reach owners as a message on the phone rather than a slip handed over at the roadside. That makes it easy to miss one.
The 45 + 30 day clock
Under the amended rules notified in January 2026, a challan recipient has 45 days to either pay or contest it online with evidence. If no objection is filed in that window, the challan is treated as accepted, and the amount must then be paid within 30 days. If it stays unpaid, the vehicle can be marked “Not to be transacted” on the VAHAN portal and effectively blocked. If you contest and the authority does not decide within thirty days, the challan ceases to have effect. Drivers who rack up five or more violations in a year may also be classed as serious offenders. 45 day challan deadline rc insurance lock 2026 +3
Why this matters if you buy or sell a vehicle
A challan is tied to a registration number, not to a person. Unpaid ones can hold up RC renewal, registration updates and insurance renewal. If you are buying a used car, check its challan record before you pay. If you are selling, clear your dues first so the deal doesn’t stall. vahanbazaar
How to do a quick challan check
- Keep the vehicle number handy.
- Do an online challan check by vehicle number on MyMotor Challan Check App. It shows pending challans along with violation details and amounts.
- Note the date, location and offence. If something looks wrong, raise a dispute inside the 45-day window with evidence.
- If the challan is genuine, pay early and save the receipt.
Stay safe from fake challan links
Transport authorities in Bihar have warned about fake challan links circulating over SMS and WhatsApp. Pay only through official portals, and never through a link from an unknown sender. patnapress
Quick tips
- Keep your mobile number and RC details up to date so notices actually reach you.
- Do a challan checking every few weeks, and always before buying or selling a vehicle.
- Don’t ignore a wrong challan. Dispute it before the window closes.
Staying on top of challans costs a few minutes now and can save you fines, blocked paperwork and a lot of stress later.
