The retina is a thin, light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye that plays a vital role in vision. It receives light and converts it into signals that are transmitted to the brain through the optic nerve. Several eye conditions can affect the retina and may cause blurred vision, distorted vision, floaters, flashes, or vision loss. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are important for protecting retinal health.

Some of the common retinal diseases include diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), retinal detachment, macular edema, retinal vein occlusion, macular hole, and inherited retinal disorders such as retinitis pigmentosa.

Diabetic retinopathy occurs when diabetes damages the blood vessels of the retina. In its early stages, it may have no noticeable symptoms. As the condition progresses, it can cause blurred vision, floaters, bleeding, and potentially serious vision loss. Regular dilated eye examinations and appropriate diabetes management can help reduce the risk of vision complications.

Age-related macular degeneration affects the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for detailed central vision. It can make activities such as reading or recognizing faces more difficult.

Retinal detachment occurs when the retina separates from its normal position. Sudden flashes of light, a sudden increase in floaters, or a dark curtain or shadow across the field of vision can be warning signs. Retinal detachment is a medical emergency and requires prompt eye care to help reduce the risk of permanent vision loss.

Macular edema occurs when fluid builds up in the macula, causing swelling and blurred central vision. It can occur as a complication of diabetic retinopathy and other retinal conditions.

Symptoms of retinal disease can vary depending on the condition. Common warning signs include blurred or distorted vision, new or increasing floaters, flashes, difficulty seeing in low light, missing areas of vision, or sudden vision changes. Some retinal diseases may have few symptoms in their early stages, making regular eye examinations important.

At Klarity Eye Care in Lucknow, comprehensive retinal evaluation can help identify retinal conditions and monitor changes in eye health. Depending on the condition, an ophthalmologist may recommend a dilated eye examination, retinal imaging, OCT, or other diagnostic tests.

If you notice sudden flashes, a sudden increase in floaters, a curtain-like shadow, or sudden vision loss, seek urgent ophthalmic evaluation. Early assessment of retinal problems can help guide timely management and protect vision.
