Why are L7M bolts paired with Grade 7M nuts?

L7M bolts and Grade 7M nuts are paired because they're a matched set designed for sour service under NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 requirements, and using them together ensures both mechanical compatibility and corrosion cracking resistance.
Here's the reasoning:
1. Matching hardness limits for sulfide stress cracking (SSC) resistance
- L7M is a variant of ASTM A320 Grade L7, but with an added restriction: maximum hardness of HRC 23.
- ASTM A194 Grade 7M nuts are the nut counterpart with the same HRC 23 maximum hardness cap.
- High hardness in low alloy steel fasteners makes them susceptible to sulfide stress cracking in wet H₂S service. Capping hardness on both the bolt and nut is what actually qualifies the assembly for sour service, if you paired an L7M bolt with a regular Grade 7 nut, the nut wouldn't meet the same cracking-resistance criteria, and the joint as a whole wouldn't be NACE compliant.
2. Matched strength/thread engagement
Nuts need sufficient strength to fully develop the bolt's proof load without stripping threads or yielding prematurely. Grade 7M nuts are proportioned to be a proper structural match for L7M bolts specifically, the same way standard Grade 7 nuts are matched to standard L7 bolts.
3. Code/spec requirements
Piping, pressure vessel, and valve codes (ASME B16.5, API 6A, NACE MR0175) typically specify bolting as an assembly, bolt + nut grade rather than the bolt alone, because the failure mode being controlled (SSC) depends on both components.
