How do you maintain copper nickel tube fittings?

Copper nickel tube fittings commonly 90/10 or 70/30 alloys, are used for seawater corrosion resistance, but they still need proper care to perform well long term.

Routine Inspection

  • Visual checks: Look for pitting, erosion corrosion, and signs of dezincification or dealloying.
  • Wall thickness measurement: Use ultrasonic testing (UT) periodically to track wear, particularly in high flow velocity areas where erosion corrosion is most likely.
  • Joint integrity: Check flanged, soldered, or brazed joints for leaks, cracking, or loosening.

Cleaning

  • Avoid abrasive cleaning that removes the protective oxide film, CuNi relies on a naturally forming cuprous oxide layer for corrosion resistance.
  • Remove biofouling (marine growth, scale) gently using non-metallic brushes or low-pressure flushing rather than aggressive mechanical scraping.
  • Avoid chlorinated cleaners in excess, while CuNi tolerates some chlorination (common in seawater systems), prolonged high-concentration exposure can damage the protective film.

Corrosion Protection

  • Preserve the oxide film: This forms naturally within the first few weeks of seawater exposure. Avoid mechanical damage or chemical stripping during maintenance.
  • Galvanic isolation: Ensure fittings aren't in direct contact with more noble metals without proper insulation, which can cause galvanic corrosion of the CuNi.
  • Cathodic protection: In marine systems, check sacrificial anodes regularly and replace as needed, but avoid over protection, which can actually damage CuNi's protective film.

Flow Velocity Management

  • Keep flow velocities within manufacturer recommended limits (typically under 3–4 m/s for 90/10 CuNi, higher for 70/30) to prevent erosion corrosion.
  • Avoid stagnant conditions too, since very low or no flow can lead to under deposit corrosion or biofouling buildup.

Joint Specific Care

  • Soldered/brazed joints: Inspect for filler metal degradation, especially if dissimilar metals were used.
  • Mechanical/flanged joints: Check gaskets and bolts for corrosion; retorque as needed following manufacturer specs.
  • Avoid dissimilar metal fasteners unless properly isolated, to prevent galvanic issues at the joint.

Environmental Considerations

  • In stagnant or low flow seawater systems, consider periodic flushing to prevent sulfide attack, which can occur under anaerobic conditions.
  • Monitor for hydrogen sulfide exposure risk if the system sits idle in contaminated water, this is a known failure mode for CuNi.

Documentation

  • Keep records of wall thickness readings over time to track corrosion/erosion rates and predict remaining service life.
  • Log any repairs, replacements, or anomalies for trend analysis.
