Court, D-shape or flat? Choosing the right wedding band shape

Wedding ring shape refers to the cross-section of the band. Two rings can look identical from above but feel completely different on the hand. Getting this right matters more than most couples expect before they buy.

Court wedding rings

Court wedding ring is the most popular profile in the UK. Both inner and outer surfaces are rounded, forming an oval cross-section. No hard edges press against the skin, and the band resists twisting on the finger. Good for first-time ring wearers and comfortable across all widths.

D-shape wedding rings

Flat inside, domed outside. The flat inner surface sits flush against the finger, giving a slightly planted, secure feel. Works well in wider widths (5mm and above) and suits anyone who has previously worn signet rings. May not be the kindest choice for sensitive skin over a full day.

Flat court wedding bands

Flat on the outside, slightly curved on the inside. Looks like a flat ring but wears closer to court against the skin. Worth trying if you like the contemporary flat look but find the hard inner edges of a purely flat ring uncomfortable after a few hours.

Flat wedding rings

Flat on both surfaces with squared-off edges. Clean and geometric. Comfortable in narrower widths (under 4mm), but wider flat rings can dig in during sustained wear. Platinum and 18ct gold hold the edges noticeably better than 9ct gold over time.
