Fix QuickBooks ND File Issue: Easy Solutions to Resolve Errors
Share article
QuickBooks is a trusted accounting solution for managing invoices, expenses, payroll, and financial records. However, users working in multi-user mode may sometimes encounter a QuickBooks ND file issue that prevents the company file from opening or being accessed over a network. The problem can be frustrating, but it is usually possible to resolve it with a few simple troubleshooting steps.
What Is a QuickBooks ND File?
The .ND file, or QuickBooks Network Data file, is created when a QuickBooks company file is used in a network environment. It contains network configuration information that helps QuickBooks communicate with the company file through the server.
For example, if your company file is named CompanyFile.QBW, the related ND file may appear as CompanyFile.QBW.ND. The ND file does not contain your accounting data. Instead, it helps QuickBooks establish a connection between the company file and other computers on the network.
Common Causes of QuickBooks ND File Errors
Several issues can cause a QuickBooks ND file error, including:
- Damaged or outdated ND files
- Incorrect hosting settings
- QuickBooks Database Server Manager problems
- Firewall blocking QuickBooks connections
- Incorrect folder permissions
- Network connectivity problems
- Outdated QuickBooks software
- Improper multi-user configuration
If QuickBooks works on the server but other workstations cannot access the company file, a network or ND file problem may be responsible.
How to Fix QuickBooks ND File Issue
1. Close and Restart QuickBooks
Close QuickBooks on all computers connected to the company file. Restart the server computer and then reopen QuickBooks. Sometimes a temporary network connection problem can cause the error.
2. Recreate the ND File
Locate the folder containing your QuickBooks company file and find the corresponding .ND file. Instead of deleting it immediately, you can rename it by adding something such as .OLD to the filename.
Next, open the QuickBooks Database Server Manager and scan the folder containing the company file. QuickBooks can recreate the ND file with fresh network information.
3. Check QuickBooks Database Server Manager
The Database Server Manager is essential for QuickBooks multi-user mode. Open it on the computer where the company file is stored and scan the appropriate folder. Make sure the company file is detected correctly.
4. Verify Hosting Settings
Incorrect hosting settings can cause QuickBooks network connection errors. Check the hosting configuration under File > Utilities and make sure the computer hosting the company file is configured correctly. Avoid having unnecessary computers act as hosts.
5. Check Firewall and Permissions
Your firewall may prevent QuickBooks from communicating with other computers. Make sure QuickBooks and its required services are allowed through the firewall.
Also check the shared company file folder and ensure users have the necessary read, write, create, and modify permissions.
6. Update QuickBooks
An outdated QuickBooks installation can cause compatibility and network problems. Install the latest available update for your QuickBooks Desktop version and restart the software.

Final Thoughts
A QuickBooks ND file issue does not necessarily mean your accounting data is damaged. In many cases, the problem is connected to the network configuration, hosting settings, firewall, or Database Server Manager.
